Our new teacher Anne McCarthy is in Italy this week representing Ireland at the European Surf Life Saving Championships! We got great news today that Anne was part of a team who won silver in an obstacle relay. Well done Anne!

We are lucky to have some of the hardest working pupils in all of West Cork! These boys paid a visit to Eimear in the Senior Room to show her some of their recent Free Writing.

We look forward to welcoming all our pupils and staff back on Monday morning – a special welcome to our incoming Junior Infants on their first day of big school and our new Special Education Teacher, Anne McCarthy, and Special Needs Assistant, Carmel Dowdall.

We are open from 9:05am with classes starting at 9:15am. For the first 2 weeks, Junior Infants will go home at 12pm. Senior Infants will go home from Monday onwards at 1:55pm and classes from 1st – 6th will finish at 2:55pm.

Last Friday 21st June we had our sports day and also held a ceremony to raise our recently awarded Green Schools’ Flag for water.

“Well earned flag raised. Sports day was amazing fun!” S. F., 6th class.

“It was a great day. We worked so hard to organise it and it all paid off in the end.” S. O’D., 6th class.

“I organized the “Fish a Duck from the Pond” with Wayne.” J. O’D., 5th class.

“I loved how we had stations for the small ones and that 6th class got to raise the flag themselves.” A. O’D., 5th class.

The senior classroom’s trip to The Glen Resource Centre in Cork city was packed full of activity and fun. http://glencentre.ie/

Garda Vincent Hurley came to visit our school recently. He spoke about water safety, farm safety and safety in the car.

He also highlighted how important it was to know what to do in an emergency situation –  remain calm,  call 999 or 112. He emphasised the importance of  knowing our Eircode in helping the emergency personnel find our home without any difficulty.

Wednesday the 12th of June saw the junior classroom students head off on their school tour to Glenview Gardens, Enniskeane. Exploring the gardens made for a fun filled day, the Hobbit house was a star attraction for all the students. Definitely well worth a return visit! https://www.glenviewgardenswestcork.com/

The students from the senior room organised co-operative games for the whole school to play using the parachute. Lifting and lowering the parachute is a very effective strengthening and stretching exercise – the biceps and triceps were bulging!

The Sea – the parachute in effect becomes the sea.

Big Ball Planet – the parachute becomes the solar system.

We also played Frog Bounce, Frogs in the Pond and Sharks and Lifeguards.

We recently invested in 2 new Clevertouch interactive whiteboards and they were installed in both classrooms yesterday. No doubt we will have great fun exploring our new equipment!

We conducted a  flower-insect timed count (FIT count). This involved us watching a 50x50cm patch of flowers for 10 minutes and taking a record of how many insects that visited the patch during the 10 minute period of time. We created cardboard quadrats to outline the areas we surveyed. We documented our findings using a FIT count template from the National Biodiversity Data Centre (a centre that documents wildlife).

We celebrated World Bee Day on May 20th by:

• Discussing the importance of pollinator friendly plants and wild flowers;
• Exploring the lane that runs near our school;
• Recording and photographing the various plants we discovered.

The pupils of the Senior Classroom were invited to attend a coaching session hosted by the Transition Year students and sports teachers of Mount Saint Michael. They were joined on the pitch by Ardagh Boys NS, Lisavarid NS, St Mary’s Girls NS and members of Carbery Rangers. Skills worked on included: hand / fist passing skill; high and low catching skills; punch passing; shooting skills; solo / bounce skills; blocking skills; and pick up / chip up skills.

A fun morning of learning was had by everyone.

Monday 13th May saw our Sixth Class students alongside Mary Ronan, our Green Schools Coordinator, journey to Cork for the presentation of our third Green Schools’ Flag. This flag is the Water Flag and was a whole school collaboration, well done to everybody in achieving this award.

On Saturday the 11th May our four Second Class students made their First Holy Communion in St Fachtna’s Church, Rosscarbery. They celebrated their day together with the children from neighbouring schools within our parish.

Inspired by a new book “What Have The Irish Ever Done For Us?” one of the Senior Room students produced a model depicting a part of a concentration camp. He also compiled a written project which he presented to his class.

The book, “What Have The Irish Ever Done For Us?” written by David Forsythe and published on March 8th by Currach Press, has the approval of our budding historian.

The students of the Senior Room took to the pitch in Rosscarbery on Wednesday 1st of May for Sciath na Scol. They played three games over the course of the day and returned to school to be greeted by a great welcome from the Junior Room. We as a whole school are extremely proud of them – well done!

Eggtraordinary activities were underway this week! The students have prepared colourful eggs to decorate our Easter table. Fine motor skills were seen in action as our cute Easter chicks were made to hang over the Easter display.

The Senior room prepared an Easter Hunt as a whole school activity which will take place tomorrow, Friday 12th March, before we finish up for the Easter holidays.

We wish everyone A Very Happy and Safe Easter Break. We are looking forward to seeing everyone on Monday the 29th April for an eggciting last term of our school year!

The Senior room explored Solar Power and the value and importance of House Insulation.

The Solar Power Tower experiment required the pupils to design and create a tower that would use the sun to power a pinwheel connected to the top.

The House Insulation experiment set a task to design and create insulation for two model houses that would keep a cup of hot water hot!

Under the guidance of their Music teacher, Tonya, the students of the Senior Room together with First and Second classes explored Irish Music throughout the ages. They compiled their research into a beautiful timeline, which can be found on the corridor, between the Senior and Junior Rooms. Some of the headings that they explored are Ancient Music of Ireland from 2500BC to 800BC, 1792 The Belfast Harp Festival and Francis O’Neill – Bantry to Chicago.

The eight week block of swimming classes has begun! Friday the 29th March saw pupils from Senior Infants to Sixth class board the bus for swimming lessons in the Celtic Ross.

In preparation for swimming lessons, students of the Senior Room prepared Water Safety Leaflets and a presentation board in the Foyer. Be sure to stop and take a look next time you are in the school.

Congratulations to our 6th and 5th students who received the sacrament of Confirmation in Rosscarbery Church on Thursday 21st March. Pictures below includes Monsignor Leonard O’Brien who confirmed them and our parish priest Fr. John McCarthy.

On the Thursday 14th March Teddy Browne, Environmental Officer, Cork County Council, arrived to inspect our work and progress towards our Green Schools’ Water Flag application. Watch this space to hear about his decision.

The ambulance popped by recently to visit our school. It is always a very welcome visit, allowing the children to explore the vehicle and see for themselves first hand what the inside looks like. This opportunity allows the children to become familiar with the work of the paramedics and their working life on the road in the ambulance.

We had a variety of fun events in the school to celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge. We held a Trá na gCeist, spot the seanfhocail and a Leprechaun Hunt. We also created our own St. Patrick’s Day Shape Poems.

Shrove Tuesday – A Lot of Pancakes!

The Junior Room made their own batter, weighing, measuring and mixing the ingredients. They waited patiently for the finished product, which was quickly eaten, as well as being given thumbs up for taste.

The Senior Room arrived armed with their own batter. The queue by the cooker was never ending or so Claire thought! Luckily Aobh volunteered to be the second pancake chef, she poured the mixture like an expert into the heated pan, produced perfect golden brown delicious pancakes every time and even flipped them with expertise. Everyone got their fair share and left the kitchen content! Though most were planning on having more when they got home.

The students of the Senior Room worked using STEM projects. “STEM education is the integration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in an effort to increase students’ interest, engagement awareness in these areas. It also encourages pupils to work together as a team using communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills while persisting with STEM challenges or projects“. (Prim-Ed Publishing)

Two projects were worked on, Build a Bridge and Designer Shoe. The task for Build a Bridge was to design and create a bridge from a material that is strong enough to hold a toy lorry. The task for Designer Shoe was to design and create a shoe based on the features of a duck’s foot.
